Akaysha Energy has successfully commissioned its 205 MW / 410 MWh Brendale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Queensland, bringing the project into operation nearly five months earlier than initially planned. The system adds significant grid support capabilities to Southeast Queensland’s transmission network as part of the broader integration of renewable energy sources.
The Brendale BESS connects directly to the South Pine substation in Brisbane’s northern suburbs and uses Tesla Megapack 2 battery units to deliver fast‑acting frequency control and ancillary services to the National Electricity Market (NEM). With its grid‑forming capabilities, the system not only helps balance supply and demand in real time, but also enhances voltage support and overall network stability key needs for Australia’s evolving power grid.
Nick Carter, Chief Executive Officer of Akaysha Energy, emphasised the significance of the early commissioning. “Bringing the Brendale BESS online ahead of schedule is a massive achievement for the entire team,” Carter said.
He also highlighted that the system’s functionality, combined with a long‑term revenue arrangement with global energy trading firm Gunvor Group, will support reliable and affordable energy for consumers.
The revenue model for the Brendale project is underpinned by a Battery Revenue Swap Agreement with Gunvor Group, granting Akaysha both contracted revenue certainty and flexibility to participate in merchant energy and frequency control markets.
The accelerated delivery reflects strong collaboration across the project’s ecosystem including Akaysha, Consolidated Power Projects Australia as engineering contractor, Tesla as technology provider, Wilson Transformer Company for electrical infrastructure, and Powerlink Queensland for transmission services.
The Brendale facility forms part of Akaysha Energy’s expanding battery storage portfolio in Australia, which includes other large‑scale projects such as the Ulinda Park BESS and the ambitious Waratah Super Battery in New South Wales.
