In Poway, California, Arevon Energy, Inc., a prominent American energy developer, owner, and operator, celebrated a major event for its Nighthawk Energy Storage Project. The 300 megawatt (MW)/1,200 megawatt-hour plant will supply electricity to up to 385,000 residences for four hours each day during periods of high electricity demand.
Arevon created the $600 million Nighthawk Energy Storage Project and will be its owner and operator. It is anticipated that Nighthawk would provide the county and the surrounding area with over $30 million in local government payments over the course of the project, which will be used to fund public services, schools, and infrastructure upgrades. An estimated $12 million of this amount will go to the city of Poway. On behalf of Arevon, California-based Rosendin is constructing the project, which is expected to provide jobs for over 130 people during its peak and boost local business, particularly at nearby shops, eateries, and lodging facilities.
Nighthawk will supply Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) with energy and resource sufficiency as part of a long-term agreement that Arevon inked in 2021. The project will connect to the grid at the Sycamore Canyon Substation, which supplies energy to the larger San Diego region and is located on the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar.
Utility-scale battery systems, which are positioned strategically on the transmission system to lower the danger of brownouts and blackouts, enable electricity to be stored during times of low demand and then efficiently discharged onto the grid, responding swiftly during times of high demand and criticality. The safest technology currently available, lithium iron phosphate battery technology, will be used by Nighthawk Energy Storage. Since 2021, Arevon has operated its energy storage facilities in communities across the United States in a safe manner, demonstrating its commitment to the safety of the people who live and work in its project regions.
“What sets the Nighthawk Energy Storage Project apart is Arevon’s years of experience and proven track record in successfully developing safe, reliable renewable energy and battery storage projects in California and throughout the United States, as well as the project’s design, which includes added safety measures and will comprise the safest and most advanced batteries on the market today. In addition, Arevon has partnered with the Poway Fire Department, which is committed to protecting the community, first responders, and the facility in the unlikely event an incident occurs,” stated Kevin Smith, Chief Executive Officer at Arevon. “Battery storage is the way of the future, and Arevon is pleased to bring this essential energy solution to Poway, where we are committed to being a great community partner through the project’s multi-decade life.”
