Cummins India has announced that it will procure renewable electricity from upcoming solar and wind hybrid power projects being developed by Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions (CleanMax) in Maharashtra under a group captive model.
The company’s Board of Directors has approved an investment of up to ₹2.70 crore in Clean Max Yellowstone, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) created for the project. This investment will secure a minimum 8.78% equity stake in one or more tranches. The investment will be made along with two other Cummins group entities in India, collectively holding at least 26% of the SPV’s equity, in compliance with regulatory requirements for group captive power plants. Cummins India and CleanMax have also signed a Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) to formalize the arrangement.
CleanMax will establish offsite captive solar, wind, or hybrid power plants in Maharashtra and supply electricity generated from these facilities to Cummins India under the group captive model.
According to Cummins India’s Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report, renewable energy accounted for 10.57% of the company’s total energy consumption in FY 2024–25. The company’s Sustainability Progress Report 2024–25 highlighted ongoing expansion of its renewable energy footprint, with on-site solar installations at 66 locations globally, including 21 new on-site solar projects completed in 2024. Cummins has also supported the Meadow Lake Wind Farm expansion in northwest Indiana through a 15-year Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA). The combined impact of renewable energy generation and procurement helped the company reduce 136,724 metric tons of CO2e emissions in 2024.
Last month, BASF India partnered with CleanMax to source electricity from its 12.21 MW wind-solar hybrid captive project in Gujarat, while CleanMax also signed a power purchase agreement with Equinix for a 26.4 MWp solar plant under a group captive structure.
This initiative underscores Cummins India’s commitment to expanding renewable energy adoption and strengthening sustainability in its operations.
