Essar Future Energy Signs ₹5,100 Crore MoU with Gujarat Government for 1 MTPA Bio-Fuel Complex

Essar Future Energy Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Gujarat at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Rajkot. Under the agreement, the company will establish a large-scale bio-fuel complex in Devbhumi Dwarka district, with an initial feedstock processing capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The project involves a proposed investment of ₹5,100 crore and is expected to generate approximately 350 direct jobs, with operations slated to begin by 2029.

The facility will be developed as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) unit and will primarily focus on decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, offering clean fuel solutions for aviation, shipping, and road transport, strengthening Gujarat’s emerging bio-energy ecosystem.

Government Support and Strategic Significance

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Hon’ble Cabinet Minister Shri Rushikeshbhai Patel, Minister of State Shri Kaushikbhai Vekaria, and other senior officials from the Energy & Petrochemicals Department, Government of Gujarat.

Commenting on the project, Mr. Vibhav Agarwal, CEO of Essar Future Energy Limited, said:
“As part of the State’s focus on building a green energy ecosystem for energy independence, aligned with the vision of Viksit Gujarat – Viksit Bharat @ 2047, Gujarat continues to lead India’s journey in industrial growth and energy transition. Essar is proud to be at the forefront of this transformation, partnering with the Government of Gujarat to develop future-ready, low-carbon energy solutions.”

Contribution to Regional Development and Clean Energy Transition

The bio-fuel complex is expected to drive regional development while reinforcing Gujarat’s leadership in clean fuels and renewable energy. Essar’s expertise spans 55 years in Energy, Infrastructure, Metals & Mining, and Technology & Retail, operating in eight countries, generating US$15 billion in revenues and employing over 10,000 people globally.

Over the past five years, Essar has strategically rebalanced its portfolio, monetising select assets while positioning itself to transition to greener operations. The group is now focused on developing sustainable assets in hydrogen, green mobility, and green steel, contributing to a broader low-carbon energy ecosystem nationally and globally.

Through its CSR arm, Essar Foundation, the group continues to invest in health, education, livelihoods, women empowerment, sports, environment, and infrastructure, leveraging over 50 years of community service to complement its industrial and clean energy initiatives.
