Hitachi Energy to Power Finland’s Largest 125 MW / 250 MWh Battery Storage System in Haapajärvi

Hitachi Energy has signed an agreement with Nordic Electro Power (NEPower) to provide advanced power conversion technology for Finland’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Haapajärvi.

Switzerland-based energy company Alpiq is building the 125 MW / 250 MWh facility to support Fingrid’s reserve market and help balance fluctuations in energy production and consumption. Hitachi Energy’s technology will maximize system performance while reinforcing the stability of Finland’s power grid.

Under the contract, Hitachi Energy will supply NEPower with key components, including a Power Conversion System (PCS), transformers, Ring Main Units (RMUs), a Power Plant Controller (PPC), and a SCADA-based energy management system. The scope also covers installation monitoring, commissioning, maintenance, and integration support. These capabilities allow real-time monitoring and control, proactive decision-making, fault detection, and performance optimization, enhancing reliability for Alpiq.

The solution is also modular, scalable, and designed for demanding Nordic conditions. It offers fast load management, high cybersecurity, and grid-forming functionality, supporting Finland’s carbon neutrality targets and ensuring energy security.

“We are pleased to partner with NEPower on this landmark clean energy investment that strengthens Finland’s energy system.

Energy storage, power electronics, automation, and electrification are essential for maintaining grid stability and flexibility as the energy transition accelerates.” Matti Vaattovaara, Managing Director, Hitachi Energy Finland.

Global energy storage capacity is expected to grow sixfold by 2030 (IEA1), and commitments made at COP292 underscore the critical role of storage and grid infrastructure in building a sustainable energy system. High-performance power conversion solutions are key to enabling large-scale projects like Haapajärvi.

Hitachi Energy has delivered more than 10 GW of energy storage and renewable integration solutions worldwide, backed by over 30 years of experience and 350+ BESS references across utility, commercial, and industrial applications.

Construction of the Haapajärvi facility is underway, with commissioning planned for mid-2027.
