India’s First Hydrogen Train Set to Roll Out in Haryana on Jind–Sonipat Route

India is set to operate its first hydrogen-powered train on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, marking a major step toward sustainable rail transportation. The project integrates a 3-tonne green hydrogen production facility, which will supply fuel for the train’s operations, underscoring India’s commitment to low-emission mobility and clean energy adoption.

Project Details and Technology

The hydrogen train, powered entirely by green hydrogen, is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and pilot alternative fuel technologies. The project involves producing hydrogen through electrolysis using renewable energy sources, ensuring a fully eco-friendly operation. With zero emissions during operation, the train aims to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen technology for wider adoption across regional rail networks.

Government Support and Strategic Significance

The inauguration of the hydrogen train is expected to be attended by the Prime Minister, highlighting the government’s focus on promoting clean mobility initiatives. Officials emphasize that the project not only aligns with India’s net-zero objectives but also sets a precedent for future hydrogen-powered rail projects nationwide.

Socio-Economic and Environmental Impact

By replacing conventional diesel engines on select routes, the hydrogen train will reduce air pollution, lower operational emissions, and contribute to sustainable transport infrastructure. The initiative also signals potential growth in the green hydrogen economy, opening avenues for local employment in renewable energy production, supply chain management, and rail maintenance.

Railway authorities plan to expand hydrogen train services to other routes based on the pilot’s success, potentially integrating this clean technology into larger sections of the national rail network. With India pushing for net-zero emissions and renewable energy adoption, this project represents a landmark achievement in the country’s transition to greener transportation.

Officials involved in the project highlighted, “This hydrogen train is a demonstration of India’s commitment to clean mobility and innovation in rail transport,” emphasizing the broader environmental and technological benefits for the nation.
