Uttar Pradesh’s proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI) City in Lucknow is being planned as a fully green-powered technology hub, with the entire project designed to operate exclusively on renewable energy sources, according to state government officials.
The upcoming AI City will integrate solar power, green hydrogen, and other clean energy solutions to meet the electricity requirements of its core infrastructure, including data centres, high-performance computing facilities, research labs, and smart urban systems. Sustainability considerations are being embedded at the design stage to ensure seamless deployment of renewable energy across all operational layers.
Clean Energy to Power Data Centres and Smart Infrastructure
Officials said the project envisions a dedicated technology ecosystem hosting global technology companies, innovation hubs, and advanced computing facilities, while maintaining a strong focus on low-carbon operations. By relying entirely on renewable energy, the AI City aims to reduce emissions, enhance energy reliability, and lower long-term dependence on conventional grid power.
The clean energy-first approach is also expected to improve the project’s attractiveness to global investors and technology firms that prioritise sustainability and ESG-compliant operations.
Alignment with ESG Goals and Global Sustainability Standards
According to officials, the AI City will align closely with international environmental, social, and governance (ESG) benchmarks, making it more appealing to multinational technology companies and institutional investors focused on low-carbon growth. Early integration of renewable energy infrastructure is expected to be more cost-effective and operationally efficient than retrofitting conventional facilities at a later stage.
Part of Broader State Clean Energy Push
The proposed AI City is aligned with Uttar Pradesh’s wider initiatives to expand solar power capacity, promote green hydrogen production, and develop energy-efficient urban infrastructure. Officials said the project could serve as a demonstration model for future technology-led urban developments across the country.
Potential Blueprint for Future Smart Cities
With significant public and private investment anticipated, the Lucknow AI City aims to attract global technology firms, research institutions, and innovation-driven enterprises while maintaining minimal environmental impact. If implemented as planned, officials noted, the project could set a precedent for future smart cities and technology parks in India, showcasing how digital growth and clean energy adoption can progress together.
