Dr. Rahul Walawalkar, President of Netzero Energy Transition Association (NETRA), Wins Prestigious IEEE Power & Energy Society Hingorani Award for Outstanding Contributions to Global Energy Storage Innovation and Policy Leadership
This distinguished recognition underscores Dr. Walawalkar’s two decades of pioneering efforts in establishing the technical, regulatory, and commercial foundations necessary to scale #energystorage worldwide. His early research at Carnegie Mellon University laid the groundwork for economic demand response and pay-for-performance ancillary services—frameworks that continue to shape modern electricity markets.
In India, Dr. Walawalkar has played a key role in shaping the National Energy Storage Mission, supporting the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), and later contributing as a NITI Aayog official to the development of the ACC PLI program for giga-scale battery manufacturing. His international collaborations include the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the World Bank Energy Storage Partnership, the International Solar Alliance, EARTHDAY.ORG, the U.S. Department of Energy, and several agencies across Europe, Singapore, Japan, Korea, and Australia.
The award was conferred in the presence of Samir Chandra Saxena, Chairman & Managing Director, Grid Controller of India Limited, along with other distinguished dignitaries, during the inaugural ceremony of the IEEE International Conference on Power Systems (ICPS) 2025.
“Receiving an IEEE award established in honor of Dr. Hingorani for my contributions to the energy storage community over the past two decades is truly humbling. This recognition has recharged my commitment to accelerate the global net-zero transition by applying these learnings in the decisive decade ahead.” Dr. Rahul Walawalkar, President, Netzero Energy Transition Association (NETRA).
NETRA commends Dr. Walawalkar for this remarkable achievement and reaffirms its commitment to accelerating the commercialization and large-scale deployment of net-zero technologies essential for smart, clean, and secure power systems worldwide.
