SUN Mobility to Launch Battery Swapping for LCVs, MCVs in 18-24 Months

The Bengaluru-based SUN Mobility plans to roll out different use cases of the product on similar lines, across segments. Earlier, SUN Mobility introduced its modular battery-swapping technology for Heavy Electric Vehicles (HEVs) at Prawaas 4.0.

These include light commercial vehicles (LCVs), medium commercial vehicles (MCVs), heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs), fixed trucks, trailers, mining vehicles, port vehicles, city buses, intercity buses, and others.

Ashok Agarwal, CEO- HEV, SUN Mobility said, “Over the next 18 to 24 months, our primary focus will be on rolling out these different use cases, showcasing our robot’s capability to handle a large addressable market and a wide variety of applications. Once we establish the effectiveness of the technology, we plan to transition to rental models.

Agarwal emphasized that increasing the electrification of commercial fleets—particularly heavy vehicles—is essential to reducing emissions, enhancing air quality, and increasing the transportation industry’s overall efficiency. The Smart BatteryTM solution from SUN Mobility is appropriate for buses and light, medium, and heavy trucks with gross vehicle weights (GVW) ranging from three to fifty-five tons.

Additionally, since the swapping process takes less than three minutes, it increases bus utilization and uptime while saving fleet managers up to 20% on operating costs. According to Agarwal, the battery’s small weight and compact design guarantee greater payload carrying capacities.

Since its establishment in 2017, SUN Mobility asserts that it has onboarded over 26,000 vehicles in the fleet categories of two, three, and tiny four-wheelers. The company operates over 630 battery swapping stations nationwide, logging around 1.6 million kilometers and 60,000 battery swaps daily—a remarkable 84% increase in utilization over the previous year.

Additionally, SUN Mobility intends to take advantage of IndianOil’s nationwide network of more than 37,000 petrol stations through its recent strategic joint venture. By combining this network with SUN Mobility’s battery-swapping technology, they hope to make it as accessible as traditional fuel stations.
