Sungrow Powers Saint Columba Anglican School with 300 kW Solar Upgrade

Sungrow, a global leader in PV inverters and energy storage systems, has successfully delivered a 300 kW commercial solar upgrade at Saint Columba Anglican School (SCAS) in Port Macquarie. Partnering with local installer MNC Solar Power, the project replaced the school’s ageing 100 kW system with a high-capacity solar solution designed to reduce electricity costs, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen SCAS’s long-term sustainability goals.

Four-Year Payback Period for Operational Savings

As a multi-building educational campus with substantial daytime energy demand, SCAS required a scalable and efficient solar system capable of maximising on-site consumption and minimising reliance on the grid. The upgrade enables significant electricity cost offsets, with an estimated payback period of around four years.

Steve Mitchell, Business Manager at SCAS, stated: “We’ll be able to offset the upfront capital costs within around four years. That means ongoing savings for the school, reducing operating expenses and allowing us to focus on delivering a great education without rising electricity costs.”

Advanced Sungrow Technology Enables Intelligent Energy Management

The system integrates three Sungrow 110 kW commercial inverters with 708 high-efficiency Canadian Solar 440 W panels. Utilizing Modbus protocol and logger-based wireless cascading technology, the inverters connect through the school’s existing wireless network. This enables intelligent load sharing across multiple buildings, eliminating distance limitations and reducing the complexity of traditional cabling. The architecture allows dynamic balancing of more than 300 kW of solar generation, optimising energy use and reducing grid dependence.

Real-Time Monitoring and Learning Opportunities

SCAS now benefits from real-time energy monitoring via the iSolarCloud platform, giving staff and students insights into electricity generation, consumption, and export to the grid. Mitchell highlighted the educational potential:

“We can see exactly how much energy is being generated and used, providing students with real-world lessons in energy management.”

Seamless Installation and Local Collaboration

The project reflects a strong partnership between Sungrow and MNC Solar Power, leveraging 30+ years of local expertise. Sungrow provided direct technical support to ensure a safe, seamless installation during school holidays, with no disruption to operations.

This upgrade demonstrates how Sungrow’s commercial inverter solutions, combined with experienced local partners, can deliver reliable, scalable, and flexible solar systems for complex environments. By enabling smarter energy management and actionable performance insights, Sungrow continues to support schools and businesses in accelerating their transition to clean, efficient, and cost-effective energy solutions.
