Tamil Nadu has launched one of its largest standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) tenders, inviting developers to set up 375 MW / 1,500 MWh of utility-scale storage across seven strategic locations. Issued by the Chief Engineer, Renewable & Clean Energy Department (TANGEDCO), the tender aims to strengthen grid flexibility, manage peak demand, and support renewable integration. Bids will be submitted through tariff-based global competitive bidding, backed by significant central Viability Gap Funding (VGF) support.

Project Locations
BESS installations will be connected to TANTRANSCO substations located in:
- Coimbatore
- Tirunelveli
- Trichy
- Madurai
- And other designated sites
TANTRANSCO will provide “Right to Use” land at a nominal cost of ₹1 per project per year.
Technical Specifications
- Daily Cycling Requirement: 1.5 cycles per day
- C-Rate: Minimum 0.25 C
- Architecture: Modular blocks of
25 MW / 100 MWh to
50 MW / 200 MWh
Systems must support peak load shifting and renewable balancing.

Bidding Process: Two-phase competitive bidding with e-reverse auction
VGF Disbursement:
- 20% at financial closure
- 50% at COD
- 30% after one year of successful operation

- Developers can bid for modular blocks but must meet technical & financial criteria.
