Tata Power on Thursday announced a further strategic investment in Khorlochhu Hydro Power Limited (KHPL), the Bhutan‑based hydropower entity, advancing its previously agreed plan to acquire a 40 per cent equity stake in the company that is developing the 600 MW Khorlochhu Hydro Power Project.
In an exchange filing, the company stated that it has invested Rs 64 crore as the third tranche of its commitment under a Share Purchase Agreement signed in October 2024. This latest infusion brings the company closer toward completing its total investment of approximately Rs 830 crore, under which Tata Power will hold its targeted 40 per cent shareholding in KHPL.
“We would like to update that the company has now invested Rs 64 crore as the third tranche out of total investment of approximately Rs 830 crore and subscribed to 64,00,000 equity shares of Rs 100 each,” Tata Power said in the filing, reaffirming its financial commitment to the hydro project.
The investment underscores Tata Power’s long‑term strategy to build significant renewable energy capacity and expand its presence in the clean energy space, particularly in hydroelectric generation. The Khorlochhu project, a key cross‑border initiative with Bhutan, is part of Bhutan’s broader push to harness its vast hydropower potential and export cleaner electricity to regional markets, including India.
Tata Power Company Ltd, a major integrated utility with a diversified energy portfolio of 15.9 GW spanning thermal, solar, and wind, has been steadily expanding its renewable footprint while continuing to explore opportunities in emerging technologies.
In addition to its hydro ambitions, the company is also eyeing the nuclear energy sector. Tata Power said it will explore setting up small modular reactor (SMR) projects with capacities in the 20–50 megawatt range, contingent on legal and regulatory changes that would allow private sector participation in nuclear power development in India.
This phased investment approach in KHPL is part of Tata Power’s broader growth trajectory, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy, cleaner power generation, and strategic expansion beyond domestic borders.
