Toyota Urban Cruiser EV Teased Ahead of India Launch on January 20

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is set to enter the all-electric vehicle (EV) market in India with the launch of the Urban Cruiser EV, a mid-size electric SUV. The company has released the first teaser for the model, which will be launched in India on January 20, 2026. This vehicle is a re-badged version of the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, a product of the successful partnership between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki that has already produced models like the Glanza-Baleno, Rumion-Ertiga, and Fronx-Taisor.

Exterior Design: Muscular and Modern

The teaser reveals that the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV retains a design similar to the near-production concept showcased at Auto Expo 2025. Key design features include:

  • Slim LED headlights with “eyebrows”
  • Sculpted bonnet and beefy front bumper
  • Piano black grille
  • Charging port above the front fender
  • Prominent BEV badge

The overall look blends the familiar silhouette of the e-Vitara with Toyota’s design language, giving the SUV a muscular and modern appearance.

Interior and Features: Technology and Safety Focused

While the interior details have not been fully revealed, it is expected to closely follow the Maruti e-Vitara’s layout. Anticipated features include:

  • Two-spoke steering wheel
  • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Level 2 ADAS suite
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • 360-degree camera
  • Multiple airbags
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

The cabin is expected to provide a premium and tech-rich experience, maintaining safety and convenience features aligned with global EV standards.

Powertrain and Battery Options

The Urban Cruiser EV is expected to share battery and motor options with the e-Vitara:

  • Battery packs: 49 kWh and 61 kWh
  • Range: The larger 61 kWh battery is expected to deliver up to 543 km on a single charge
  • Motor options: Front axle-mounted motors delivering 144 hp and 174 hp

This setup positions the Urban Cruiser EV as a capable and competitive entrant in India’s mid-size electric SUV segment.

Market Positioning and Competitors

Upon launch, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will compete in the growing Indian electric SUV segment, taking on rivals such as:

  • Hyundai Creta Electric
  • MG ZS EV
  • Tata Curvv EV
  • Mahindra BE6
  • Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara
  • Upcoming Tata Sierra EV

With Toyota leveraging its collaboration with Maruti Suzuki, the Urban Cruiser EV aims to combine reliable performance, advanced features, and competitive range, making it a strong contender in the segment.
