Assam Commissions Its First Large-Scale 70 MW Solar Power Project in Dhubri

Assam has achieved a significant renewable energy milestone with the commissioning of its first large-scale 70 MW solar power project at Dhubri, marking a major step toward clean energy adoption in the Northeast. The project has been developed by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL) on land provided by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) and is now fully operational.

The solar plant was formally inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, underscoring the state government’s commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity and reducing dependence on conventional power sources. The project is also being recognised as Northeast India’s first utility-scale solar power facility, setting a benchmark for future developments in the region.

Project Development and Technical Details

The 70 MW Dhubri Solar Project was implemented by SGEL, a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN Limited, under a tariff discovered through a competitive bidding process. The project has been constructed on APDCL land, enabling optimal land utilisation while supporting Assam’s clean energy ambitions. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate over 100 million units of electricity annually, contributing significantly to the state’s power supply.

The solar facility will help offset carbon emissions by reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based power generation, supporting India’s national renewable energy and climate targets. It also enhances grid stability in the region by adding clean, locally generated power to Assam’s electricity mix.

Economic, Environmental, and Social Impact

Beyond clean power generation, the project has delivered local employment opportunities during its construction and is expected to support ongoing operations and maintenance roles. The initiative aligns with Assam’s broader development goals by promoting sustainable infrastructure while ensuring reliable electricity availability.

The commissioning of the Dhubri solar plant also reflects improved coordination between central public sector enterprises and state utilities, demonstrating how collaborative efforts can accelerate renewable energy deployment in emerging markets.

Strategic Significance for Assam and the Northeast

As Assam’s first large-scale solar installation, the Dhubri project serves as a foundation for future renewable energy investments across the state and the wider Northeast region. It highlights the region’s untapped solar potential and signals growing investor confidence in utility-scale renewable projects outside traditional solar hubs.

With the successful commissioning of the 70 MW Dhubri Solar Power Project, Assam takes a decisive step toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, reinforcing its role in India’s transition to low-carbon power generation.
