Ather Energy, a leading Indian electric vehicle manufacturer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, to jointly advance innovation and manufacturing in India’s fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) and clean mobility sector.
The MoU was formalized in the presence of Mr. Sanjiv Singh, Joint Secretary, DPIIT, and Mr. Tarun Mehta, Co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy. This strategic collaboration forms a key part of the government’s broader efforts to promote climate-aligned, manufacturing-led growth through the empowerment of deep-tech and hardware startups.
“This partnership with DPIIT is a significant step in building the support ecosystem for deep-tech startups in India,” said Tarun Mehta, Co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy. “It will enable them to tackle core technology challenges, scale high-quality products, and accelerate the transition to clean mobility.”
Under the terms of the MoU, Ather Energy will collaborate with DPIIT and the Startup India initiative to roll out programs such as the Bharat Startup Grand Challenge, exposure visits to EV manufacturing facilities, talent and skills development efforts, and participation in flagship innovation platforms like Startup Mahakumbh.
The initiative aligns with the Build in Bharat vision, driven by the Startup Policy Forum (SPF)—a collective of over 50 Indian manufacturing and innovation-focused startups. It aims to nurture indigenous EV technologies and position India as a global leader in hardware innovation.
The MoU further focuses on supporting startups engaged in developing core EV components, battery technologies, and cleantech solutions. The long-term goal is to establish a resilient, scalable, and globally competitive EV ecosystem anchored in Indian innovation.
Government officials noted that this partnership marks a critical milestone in India’s journey toward clean, self-reliant, and innovation-driven electric mobility—reinforcing national objectives around climate action and sustainable industrial development.
