Bühler has supplied 113 complete production systems for manufacturing battery slurries and dry compounds worldwide over the past decade, reaching a key milestone in its industrial battery business. The achievement highlights Bühler’s growing role as a solution provider for large-scale and more sustainable battery manufacturing as global demand for energy storage continues to rise.
More than 70 lithium-ion battery electrode slurry production lines have been delivered in China, one of the most competitive battery markets globally. Additional installations across Europe and North America demonstrate Bühler’s expanding international presence and its ability to support manufacturers in different industrial environments.
“This milestone is not about volume alone,” said Adrian Spillmann, Head of Market Segment Battery Electrode Compounds at Bühler. “It reflects more than a decade of continuous process development, project execution experience, and close collaboration with customers who need production technologies that perform reliably at scale.”
Addressing Industry Challenges
Battery manufacturers face increasing pressure to expand capacity while improving efficiency and lowering costs. Manufacturing represents around 20% to 30% of total battery production costs, making process optimization critical. Outside Asia, many producers also face skill and knowledge gaps when building large-scale facilities.
Bühler addresses these challenges through its continuous mixing technology for electrode slurry production. The system uses a twin-screw mixer that combines dosing, pre-mixing, kneading, dispersing, and degassing into one continuous step. Compared to traditional batch mixing, the technology reduces energy use significantly producing one ton of battery slurry with just 56 kWh, about four times less than conventional systems.
Supporting Europe’s Battery Growth
Bühler works with large battery manufacturers and research institutions such as the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) and Germany’s Fraunhofer FFB. In Italy, Bühler is collaborating with FIB S.p.A. at its Teverola 2 plant, designed for 8 GWh annual production capacity.
“Battery manufacturing is not only about machines; it is about mastering processes under real industrial conditions,” Spillmann said. “Our strength lies in translating process know-how into scalable, reliable production systems and standing alongside customers as they ramp up.”
Looking ahead, Bühler is investing in next-generation technologies, including Dry Battery Electrode (DBE) processes. “As the battery industry matures, manufacturers will differentiate themselves through efficiency, quality, and sustainability,” Spillmann added. “Bühler is well positioned to support that transition with proven technology, global reach, and deep process expertise.”
