Chery Set to Begin Solid-State Battery Road Tests in 2027

Chery Set to Begin Solid-State Battery

Chery Chairman Yin Tongyue has announced that the automaker plans to begin real-world testing of solid-state batteries in its vehicles in 2027. The company is set to invest approximately 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) in research and development focused on solid-state battery technology as it works to advance next-generation energy storage solutions for electric vehicles.
Yin Tongyue disclosed plans to conduct vehicle verification of the solid-state batteries in 2027 at the 2026 World Power Battery Conference held in Yibin, Sichuan, on September 3. The chairman shared that Chery won’t integrate any technical solution into vehicles if they are insufficiently safe. The same rule also applies to next-gen battery technology.
In March 2026, Chery announced the Rhino S solid-state battery line. It will include cell variants with energy density ranging from 400 Wh/kg to 600 Wh/kg. According to Chery officials, BEVs with the new battery will be able to run up to 1,500 km on a single charge. The first car to adopt those solid-state batteries for road tests is the Exeed ES8 station wagon that was teased in December 2025.
Chery chairman shared that the company achieved an energy density of the solid-state cells of 400 Wh/kg. Chery will also begin the Rhino solid-liquid (semi-solid) battery pack vehicle installations in Q4 2026. The Wuhu-based automaker takes this tech seriously. Its planned investments in the development of SSB are 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion USD).
We have previously reported that Chery’s offshoot, Anwa New  Energy Technology, began trial production of the engineering samples of the solid-state battery cells. This company is also backed by Gotion High-Tech, which is known for its close ties with Volkswagen. Anwa’s plant adopts a full-chain production with a planned capacity of 1.25 GWh annually. Its officials previously shared that they aim to kick off the volume production of 500 Wh/kg batteries in 2027.
CarNewsChina previously mentioned that the solid-state battery battle intensified in China, with a wide range of automakers and battery manufacturers announcing the start of trial production and real-world tests of SSB in 2027. The list includes Gotion High-Tech, Farasis Energy, CALB, CATL, BYD, and Geely.
With a 42.9% market share, CATL is the biggest battery manufacturer in China, according to China EV DataTracker. The other companies have single-digit market shares, while BYD comes in second with 19.5%. Third, fourth, and fifth place go to CALB, Gotion, and EVE, respectively.
