Cygni Energy, HiNa Partner to Boost Sodium-Ion Battery Innovation for EVs in India

A strategic alliance has been established by Cygni Energy Private Limited and HiNa Battery Technologies, a leading company in sodium-ion technology worldwide. Through this partnership, HiNa’s state-of-the-art sodium-ion cells will be used to develop storage solutions tailored to India, with an emphasis on environmentally friendly and economically viable lithium-based battery substitutes.

For some uses, sodium-ion batteries are seen to be a viable substitute for lithium batteries since they are dependent on more common and less essential minerals. These batteries provide several benefits, such as improved safety, a high degree of temperature tolerance, and support for quick charging. The lower energy density of sodium-ion is not a barrier for many uses in India, including stationary storage and three-wheelers (3W). Sodium is widely available and contributes to price stability, which is important for India’s decarbonization objectives.

Venkat Rajaraman, CEO of Cygni Energy, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “HiNa is a global leader in the Sodium-ion space, and together, we can develop innovative applications with this technology. Sodium-ion batteries perform exceptionally well in low temperatures, are highly safe, and offer comparable cycle performance to Lithium-ion batteries. India’s transition to a low-carbon economy will benefit greatly from these batteries, which can be fast charged in under 30 minutes and provide excellent cost-performance.”

With two gigawatt-scale manufacturing facilities currently running, HiNa is set to play a crucial role in India’s energy revolution, alongside Cygni Energy’s local experience in battery manufacture. This collaboration is anticipated to greatly accelerate the use of sodium-ion technology in India’s transportation and energy sectors, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly substitute for lithium-based solutions.
