December 2025 EV Market Shake-Up: Tata Retains Crown as VinFast Stuns India’s Electric Car Space

December 2025 has emerged as one of the most eventful months in India’s electric passenger vehicle (EV) market, delivering a dramatic reshuffle in rankings, a stronghold performance by Tata Motors, and a headline-grabbing debut by Vietnamese automaker VinFast, which outperformed several established premium brands in its very first run.

While Tata Passenger Electric Mobility continued its dominance at the top, the month’s biggest talking point was VinFast’s entry into the top four overtaking BMW, Kia, and Hyundai.

December 2025 EV Highlights

  • Tata Motors remains the undisputed market leader with 6,441–6,453 units sold
  • MG Motor India secures second place, staying ahead of Mahindra by ~489 units
  • Mahindra Electric continues its strong run with over 3,000 units
  • VinFast makes a powerful debut, selling 375 units, beating BMW, Kia, and Hyundai
  • BMW edges past Kia in the premium EV segment

OEM-wise EV Sales Rankings (4-Wheelers)

7 Hyundai Motor India 262 1.76%
8 BYD India 237 1.59%

Market Leader Analysis: Tata’s Unshakable Stronghold

With over 6,400 EVs sold in December, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility once again proved why it remains India’s EV market leader. The company enjoyed a commanding lead of nearly 2,900 units over MG Motor, translating to a 43.27% market share.

Tata’s strength lies in its wide and diversified EV portfolio, ranging from:

  • Tiago.EV (entry-level)
  • Nexon.EV & Punch.EV
  • Curvv.EV
  • Harrier.EV

Each model caters to a different price and use case, enabling Tata to maintain volumes nearly double that of its closest competitor.

Next Big Launch: Tata Sierra.EV, already generating significant buzz, is expected to further strengthen Tata’s leadership.

The Battle for No. 2: MG vs. Mahindra

December reaffirmed the intense rivalry between MG Motor India and Mahindra Electric.

MG Motor India

  • Units Sold: 3,555–3,557
  • Market Share: 23.88%
  • YoY Market Share Change: ↓ 17.91%
  • EV Line-up: Comet EV, ZS EV, Windsor EV, Cyberster, M9

Mahindra Electric

  • Units Sold: 3,066
  • Market Share: 20.6%
  • EV Line-up: XUV400, BE6, BE6 FE, XEV 9e, XEV 9S

Mahindra’s upcoming deliveries of BE6 FE and XEV 9S are expected to further intensify this contest in the coming months.

The VinFast Surprise: A New Contender Arrives

The most talked-about development of December 2025 was VinFast Auto India’s debut performance.

  • Units Sold: 375
  • Market Share: 2.52%
  • Models: VF6, VF7

In a remarkable achievement, VinFast:

  • Outsold BMW (343 units)
  • Beat Kia (313–314 units)
  • Surpassed Hyundai (262 units)

Achieving this with just two models, VinFast’s success is attributed to sharp pricing and smart packaging, marking one of the strongest debuts by a new EV entrant in India.

Premium EV Segment: BMW Stays Ahead of Kia

In the luxury and premium EV space:

BMW India

  • Units Sold: 343
  • Market Share: 2.30%
  • YoY Growth: +127.15% (151 units in Dec 2024)

Kia India

  • Units Sold: 313–314
  • Market Share: 2.10%
  • EV Portfolio: Carens Clavis EV, EV6, EV9

BMW retained a narrow lead over Kia, showcasing consistent demand in the high-value EV segment.

Lower Down the Rankings

  • Hyundai Motor India: 262 units
    (Creta Electric, IONIQ 5)
  • BYD India: 237 units
    (Atto 3, eMAX-7, Seal, Sealion)
  • Tesla & Mercedes-Benz: 68 units each

Final Word

December 2025 will be remembered as a turning point in India’s EV journey. While Tata Motors retained its crown with authority, the arrival of VinFast has injected fresh competition into the market. With MG and Mahindra locked in a fierce battle and new launches lined up across brands, India’s EV race is only getting more exciting.
