Foxconn to Invest ₹15,000 Crore in Tamil Nadu

In a major boost to India’s electric mobility and manufacturing ambitions, Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn has announced plans to invest ₹15,000 crore in Tamil Nadu to set up advanced EV battery and technology manufacturing units.

The announcement came after a high-level Foxconn delegation led by Robert Wu, the company’s India representative and senior global executive, met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin in Chennai. The meeting culminated in a commitment that positions Tamil Nadu as one of Foxconn’s largest strategic hubs outside China.

According to Industries Minister T. R. B. Rajaa, the investment will create around 14,000 jobs, marking a fresh wave of employment in the state’s fast-growing clean mobility and electronics ecosystem. The new facilities are expected to manufacture battery cells, modules, and high-end electronic components, aimed at supporting both domestic EV demand and export markets.

Foxconn already employs over 41,000 people in Tamil Nadu, primarily through its iPhone assembly units. This new expansion represents the company’s next big diversification move in India — one that aligns with the government’s Make in India, EV 2030, and battery localization goals.

To ensure smooth project execution, the Tamil Nadu government will establish a dedicated “Foxconn Desk” within Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state’s industrial facilitation agency — the first such company-specific cell ever created by the state.

Industry insiders suggest the investment will likely focus on a combination of EV battery manufacturing, energy storage systems (ESS), and advanced semiconductor-related technologies, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s reputation as India’s most advanced manufacturing destination.

The move also comes at a time when Foxconn is expanding aggressively across India, including a new semiconductor project in Karnataka and a manufacturing complex in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. With this latest investment, Foxconn is positioning itself at the intersection of India’s clean mobility and high-tech supply chains — both critical to the country’s economic and energy transition.

Analysts view this as a watershed moment for Tamil Nadu’s industrial ecosystem. “This isn’t just an expansion — it’s Foxconn doubling down on India’s potential to become a global EV manufacturing powerhouse,” said a senior industry executive familiar with the developments.

Once operational, Foxconn’s upcoming facilities are expected to serve as a key node in India’s EV battery export chain, catalyzing new partnerships in the domestic auto and energy sectors.
