In a major step toward promoting zero-emission public transportation, GreenCell Mobility has deployed 75 electric buses across Puducherry, supporting the Union Territory’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable urban mobility. The initiative was highlighted as part of the region’s ongoing efforts to enhance public transport services while reducing emissions.
Fleet Composition and Operations
The deployment includes 25 nine-meter buses and 50 twelve-meter air-conditioned buses that are meant to work well on both standard and trunk routes. The buses will run from the Mettupalayam Bus Depot, making it easier to get around important city corridors. EKA Mobility provided and set up the buses for the project, which is being done in partnership with them.
Each bus is equipped with advanced technology, including an Integrated Transport Management System (ITMS), real-time vehicle tracking, passenger information systems, surveillance cameras for safety, and accessibility features for differently-abled passengers. These features are expected to enhance operational reliability and efficiency while reducing tailpipe emissions.
Commitment to Sustainable Urban Mobility
Commenting on the launch, Devndra Chawla, Managing Director and CEO of GreenCell Mobility, said, “With Puducherry, we are reinforcing our commitment to develop sustainable public transport ecosystems across India’s emerging urban centres. Backed by strong institutional capital and policy support, we are focused on delivering reliable, technology-led electric mobility solutions that cities and Union Territories can depend on for the long term.”
Nationwide Expansion
Beyond Puducherry, GreenCell Mobility operates large-scale projects in multiple states, including 700 buses in Uttar Pradesh, 150 in Surat, 582 in Madhya Pradesh, 750 in Andhra Pradesh, 915 in Telangana, 400 in Karnataka, and 570 in Delhi. The company also runs 50 intercity electric buses for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and premium services under its NueGo brand, connecting over 100 locations nationwide.
Environmental and Social Impact
The introduction of electric buses in Puducherry is expected to significantly reduce tailpipe emissions, improve air quality, and encourage public adoption of electric mobility. It also strengthens technology-driven sustainable infrastructure and sets a model for other urban centres in India.
“GreenCell Mobility continues to expand its footprint, demonstrating how innovative electric transport solutions can drive cleaner, safer, and more efficient urban mobility,” Chawla added.
This deployment marks a key milestone in Puducherry’s journey toward sustainable urban transportation and reflects India’s broader push for green mobility solutions.
