Owing to the importance of this joint venture, one of India’s largest City gas Distribution (CGD) companies, Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL), has signed one of the Gas Sales Agreements (GSA) for the supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) with Waaree Energy through its owner, Shriram Energy. Under this contract, GGL will provide 50,000 standard cubic meters per day (scmd) of PNG to the new lithium-ion cell manufacturing plant that Waaree is putting up in Valsad, Gujarat.
It is a move in the right direction for the country towards clean and sustainable energy solutions. The lithium-ion plant is in the construction process, and it is scheduled to be commissioned in the 4th quarter of FY 2025-26. When launched, the factory will serve the Indian government in its initiative to decrease imported lithium-ion battery purchases, which is a market that is essential to electric vehicles (EVs), portable technology, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The report by CareEdge has also projected that by FY 2026-27, the import reliance of lithium-ion batteries will reduce to 20 percent in India. As the need and supply of EVs and the integration of renewable energy assets and investments keep increasing, the production facility will be local and the fuel supply will be clean, which will be instrumental in closing the energy ecosystem.
Waaree Energies Limited (WEL) is a group company of the Waaree Energies group, and it is the largest solar PV module producer in India, as stated by CRISIL, with a total of 13.3 GW installed. It is now in more than 20 countries and also expanding into the production of lithium-ion cells, hydrogen cell and also solar wafer production. Its collaboration with Gujarat Gas will help the company not only to do the green manufacturing but also to manage the carbon footprint of the rapidly expanding Indian clean technology industry.
Gujarat gas is a state-owned gas company that is run under the control of the Government of Gujarat with a population of 22.67 lakh households and more than 4,000 industrial units and has more than 828 CNG stations in 44 districts of six states, namely Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and one Union Territory, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
