India Achieves Nearly 19.5 Lakh Rooftop Solar Installations Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

As of 31st October 2025, Karnataka has achieved a total installed renewable energy capacity of 25,675.39 MW, contributing 10.24% to India’s overall renewable energy capacity of 250,643.45 MW.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) is a demand-driven scheme for the installation of rooftop solar (RTS) systems, wherein all residential consumers in the country having grid connected electricity connection of the local DISCOM can avail the benefits of the scheme by applying on the National Portal of the scheme. As on 26.11.2025, a total of 18,72,499 RTS systems have been installed, benefitting 23,47,694 households, under the scheme across the country. Out of these, a total of 14,151 RTS systems have been installed, benefitting 22,313 households, in the state of Karnataka.

In the Belagavi district of Karnataka, a total of 25,778 applications have been submitted on the National Portal and 681 households have been benefitted with installations of rooftop solar under the scheme as on 26.11.2025.

To accelerate the progress and achieve the target of installation of rooftop solar for one crore households by 2026-27 under PMSG: MBY across the country including in the Belagavi city of Karnataka, the Ministry has taken following measures:

  • Online process from registration to disbursal of subsidy directly into the bank account of the residential consumer through National Portal.
  • Availability of collateral free loan from nationalized banks at concessional interest rate of repo- rate plus 50 bps i.e. 6% per annum for the present with tenure of 10 years. As on 26.11.2025, a total of 5,67,939 RTS systems have been installed through loan.
  • Simplified the regulatory approval process by waiving technical feasibility requirement and introducing auto load enhancement upto 10 kW.
  • Included RESCO/ Utility led Aggregation (ULA) Models
  • Net metering agreement has been made part of application in the National Portal.
  • Simplified process for registration of vendors to ensure sufficient and qualified vendors are available. 20423 no of vendors registered as on 11.11.2025.
  • Capacity building and training programmes being conducted for creating skilled manpower. 1,49,916 trained till 11.11.2025.
  • Creating awareness about the scheme, through awareness and outreach program such as print advertising in leading newspapers, TV commercials campaigns, Radio campaigns across FM stations including regional channels, etc., in the country.
  • Regular monitoring of the progress of the scheme at different levels including with states/DISCOMs.
  • Conducting regional meetings. Review meeting for North East Region was held recently on 31.10.2025, in Guwahati at the level of Union Cabinet Minister.
  • Established grievance redressal mechanism for timely resolution of grievances. A Call Centre with telephone number 15555 is operational in 12 languages.

Under the scheme for Development of Solar Parks and Ultra-Mega Solar Power Projects, a total amount of Rs. 351.94 crore has been released as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for development of the Pavagada Solar Park with a capacity of 2000 MW and its power evacuation infrastructure. The Pavagada Solar Park has been fully operational with 2000 MW capacity since December 2019. The major lessons learned for the future projects include timely availability of land and advanced planning of transmission infrastructure for large-scale development of solar projects.

As per the inputs received from the Government of Karnataka, there are currently no plans for setting up solar or wind energy parks in North Karnataka, specifically in Belagavi District.
