The Madhya Pradesh (MP) Cabinet has approved three major solar-cum-energy storage projects to meet the state’s growing power requirements. These initiatives will be implemented through Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (REWA), the nodal agency for large-scale solar development in the state.
Project Details and Capacity
The approved projects include:
- 300 MW solar project with 4-hour storage
- 300 MW solar project with 6-hour storage
- 200 MW solar project with 24-hour storage
The state government has indicated that these projects will employ single-cycle charging-based energy storage systems to ensure reliable, affordable, and clean electricity during peak demand periods. This step aims to address the limitations of renewable energy, which is dependent on sunlight or wind availability, and strengthen grid stability as the share of renewable power increases.
Ensuring 24/7 Renewable Power
With solar energy typically available only during daylight hours, and wind energy subject to variable conditions, the Cabinet emphasized the importance of energy storage solutions. These solar-cum-storage projects are expected to enable round-the-clock electricity supply, supporting Madhya Pradesh’s efforts to provide consistent and reliable power for industrial, commercial, and residential consumers.
Private Sector Participation: Shakti Pumps’ Investment
Highlighting private sector involvement, Madhya Pradesh–based Shakti Pumps has recently invested Rs 3 crore in its subsidiary, Shakti Energy Solutions Limited, to establish a greenfield high-efficiency solar DCR cell and PV module manufacturing plant in Pithampur. The facility will have a planned production capacity of 2.20 GW. The initial investment will cover preliminary plant-related expenses, while major payments for machinery and other setup costs are scheduled to follow.
Strategic Importance
The combined initiative of state-backed solar-cum-storage projects and private investments is expected to significantly enhance Madhya Pradesh’s renewable energy infrastructure, support industrial growth, and reinforce the state’s leadership in clean energy adoption. By leveraging modern storage technologies, Madhya Pradesh aims to integrate renewable energy more effectively into the grid, ensuring reliable electricity for all consumers while promoting sustainable development.
