SJVN Limited has announced that its Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) has reached a major milestone by generating 150 billion units (BU) of cumulative electricity. The achievement was recorded on Monday and marks an important moment for the hydropower station, which is considered the country’s largest underground hydro power project.
To celebrate the occasion, a ceremony was organised at the powerhouse in the presence of Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN, and Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Personnel), along with senior officials of the company.
Operational Excellence Since 2004
Congratulating the team, Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN said the milestone reflects the project’s consistent performance since it started operations in May 2004.
Speaking at the event, he said, “It has emerged as a cornerstone of the northern power grid, delivering dependable green energy and ensuring grid stability during peak demand periods.”
The power station has achieved several operational records over the years, highlighting its efficiency in utilising favourable hydrological conditions.
Key Operational Records
- Highest annual generation: 7,610.257 million units in FY 2011–12
- Highest monthly generation: 1,222.170 million units in July 2024
- Highest daily generation: 39.572 million units recorded on August 13, 2024
These milestones show that the plant runs well and can make a lot of clean electricity.
Recognition for Team Efforts
Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma praised the contributions of employees associated with the project over the years. He said the hydro power station has played an important role in supporting development and economic growth in the surrounding region.
Rajeev Kapoor, the Head of Project at NJHPS, thanked the SJVN management, the Ministry of Power, and the Government of Himachal Pradesh for their ongoing support. He also thanked the employees, contractors, contract workers, stakeholders, and the local community for their hard work in reaching this goal.
Environmental and Regional Impact
According to the company, generating 150 billion units of clean electricity has delivered significant environmental benefits by reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based power and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. This contribution supports India’s broader clean energy transition and climate commitments.
The Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station is run by SJVN. It keeps up high operational standards by regularly upgrading its equipment, using digital monitoring systems, and following strict maintenance procedures. By creating jobs and improving infrastructure in nearby areas, the project has also helped the region’s social and economic growth.
