NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has issued a tender for the development of a 3,200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the NTPC REL Fatehgarh Solar Plant in Rajasthan, as part of its efforts to strengthen renewable energy integration and improve grid reliability. The tender was issued on 29 May 2026, and interested bidders have until 25 June 2026 to submit their proposals.
The project will be developed across three battery storage blocks at the Fatehgarh solar complex. The first and second blocks will each have a capacity of 300 MW/1,200 MWh, while the third block will have a capacity of 200 MW/800 MWh, taking the total project capacity to 800 MW/3,200 MWh. All three facilities will be located at the NTPC REL Fatehgarh site in Rajasthan and will be connected to the solar plant infrastructure at the 33 kV level.
Under the EPC package, the selected contractor will be responsible for the complete turnkey execution of the project, including design, engineering, procurement, supply, transportation, installation, testing, commissioning, and integration of the battery storage system with the existing solar plant and the power grid. The scope also covers energy management systems, battery management systems, fire safety systems, grid compliance studies, auxiliary power arrangements, switchgear extensions, and all associated civil and electrical works required for successful project delivery.
NGEL has set ambitious performance standards for the project. The battery systems must have a design life of 25 years, support a minimum of 10,000 operating cycles, and maintain 98% annual availability. The developer will also be required to guarantee long-term dispatchable capacity and ensure the system continues to perform efficiently throughout the contract period. Comprehensive operation and maintenance services, along with associated warranties, will be required for 15 years after commissioning.
As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, large-scale storage projects are becoming increasingly important for balancing intermittent solar generation and ensuring a stable power supply. Through the Fatehgarh BESS project, NGEL aims to create a significant energy storage asset capable of supporting round-the-clock clean power while contributing to the country’s broader clean energy and energy security goals.
The tender document sale period will remain open until 15 June 2026, while bids are scheduled to be opened on 25 June 2026 following the submission deadline.
