NTPC Limited has issued a request to bid that a battery energy storage system (BESS) will be installed at its thermal power stations with a capacity of 4,000 MWh. The Slime trails tenders would have the latest closing date of September 19, 2025.
This tender offers 300 MW/ 1,200 MWh and 1,400 MW/ 2,800 MWh capacities at 11 sites all at 400 kV/220 kV /132 kV Point of Interconnection. The BESS will be designed to last 12 years. According to the tender, it ought to experience two cycles of operation a day.
According to the tender, the BESS will contain Battery System, Battery Management System (BMS), Energy Management System (EMS) and SCADA, Power Conversation System (PCS).
Moreover, it is possible to add that the provision of protection system, Communication System, HT & LT system, Auxiliary power system, Fire Fighting, remote control and monitoring, and all other related materials and accessories needed to maintain terrestrial operation and maintenance of the BESS system were also provided in the NTPC tender.
A Comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contract (CAMC) of the BESS system is proposed under the tender during the maintenance of the system on an annual basis with a 12 year term starting after the completion of the Performance Guarantee (PG) Test.
NTPC Past BESS Projects
In the previous financial year of 2020-21, NTPC Group had indicated 20 GW of pumped storage projects pipeline. During an investors call, Nakul Srinivasan, the Director of Finance of NTPC and NTPC Green Energy Ltd gave an update that prefeasibility reports were done on 18 projects out of which the detailed project reports are being conducted on four projects.
NTPC has equally been expanding its BESS pile through several tenders. NTPC, having a renewable energy segment named NTPC REL, made a recent bid call of a 2,500 MW / 10,000 MWh BESS facility at thermal power plants. Previously, as well, in June 2019, it has also floated a tender to install and trial a pilot BESS installation to remove diesel generators in the Dadri Thermal Plant.
