Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated major transmission infrastructure projects worth over ₹3,600 crore in Rajasthan, aimed at strengthening the evacuation of renewable energy and boosting India’s clean energy network. The projects were developed by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (POWERGRID), a Maharatna public sector company under the Ministry of Power.
The newly inaugurated infrastructure is designed to enhance the movement of power generated from solar-rich regions in Rajasthan, especially from the Bhadla solar zone, one of the largest solar parks in the world. By expanding and upgrading the high-voltage transmission network, the projects will support more efficient transfer of renewable electricity from generation sites to demand centres across the national grid.
Strengthening Renewable Evacuation
The transmission work includes the Transmission System for Evacuation of Power from Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) in Rajasthan (20 GW) under Phase-III Part-B1, which comprises:
- The 765/400/220 kV Bhadla-III substation, and
- The 765 kV double-circuit Bhadla-III–Sikar-II transmission line.
Another component is the Transmission System Strengthening Scheme for Evacuation of Power from Solar Energy Zones (8.1 GW) in Rajasthan under Phase-II Part-E, which includes the 765 kV double-circuit Bhadla-II–Sikar-II second transmission line. These new links will significantly increase the capability to deliver solar and other renewable power from Rajasthan to the wider grid.
Boosting India’s Clean Energy Growth
The improved transmission network is expected to be very important for meeting India’s growing need for electricity and reaching its renewable energy goals. The projects will help the country switch to a greener energy mix by making it possible to move a lot of clean power around. This will make it less reliant on fossil fuels.
In his address at the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the importance of a strong transmission network in harnessing India’s renewable potential and ensuring reliable power delivery to consumers. These projects reinforce POWERGRID’s role in building a resilient national grid capable of supporting the rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity and long-term economic growth.
