Rockwell Automation, the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation and digital transformation, has announced a collaboration with Stockholm, Sweden-based zinc-ion battery manufacturer, Enerpoly. The effort aims to set new benchmarks for battery cell and pack manufacturing by leveraging innovative techniques such as dry electrode coating and alternative cell architectures.

By focusing on zinc-ion technology, as opposed to lithium-ion solutions, Rockwell and Enerpoly are uniquely positioned to drive innovation and establish safer, more cost-effective, and more environmentally friendly battery alternatives. With customers prioritizing performance, safety, sustainability, supply reliability, and competitive costs, this initiative leverages advanced automation and precision manufacturing to enhance quality, optimize production efficiency, and drive down costs in zinc-ion manufacturing. Ultimately, this effort will accelerate the clean energy transition by providing greener energy storage solutions.

“Zinc-ion batteries are uniquely positioned to fill critical gaps in the market, providing reliable solutions for grid stabilization, critical infrastructure, and backup power,” said Eloisa de Castro, chief executive officer, Enerpoly. “Our technology offers key advantages, so we look forward to working with a trusted advisor like Rockwell Automation, who has firsthand experience in facilitating growth and streamlining production ramp-up in the battery industry.”

Innovation is at the heart of this collaboration where Rockwell Automation brings its proven track record of pioneering new solutions in the manufacturing industry, achieving high-quality outcomes by utilizing integrated architecture solutions. The company contributes valuable industrial expertise in automation, logistics and technical optimization, which are crucial components of this collaboration. Meanwhile, Enerpoly is advancing next-generation battery chemistry, with breakthroughs in both materials and design to enhance cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency. The company has taken a notably capital efficient approach to scaling, recently establishing a megafactory in Sweden. By expanding dry electrode manufacturing, Enerpoly can reduce capital expenditures, cut energy consumption, lower its carbon footprint, and improve battery energy density.

“Enerpoly’s focus on sustainable energy solutions aligns with Rockwell Automation’s commitment to innovate within industrial automation and sustainability,” said Ted Stockburger, global industry director, electric vehicle and advanced mobility, Rockwell Automation. “Enerpoly’s batteries utilize abundant materials, reduce costs and environmental impact, while enabling local sourcing for a more resilient and sustainable supply chain. By working together, we can accelerate Enerpoly’s speed to market and ensure high performance on the battery production lines, allowing for effective and rapid scaling while aiding in their sustainability goals.”

Both Rockwell Automation and Enerpoly are dedicated to sustainability and regulatory compliance, demonstrating best practices and excellence in their operations, with a shared commitment to environmental responsibility. This collaboration between Rockwell Automation and Enerpoly is poised to lead the industry in yields, operational efficiency, and innovation. The goal is to make a significant impact on the battery sector by scaling and commercializing innovative technologies.
