SECI and NDMC Sign MoU to Solarise 244 Municipal Buildings Across Delhi

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to implement solar energy projects across 244 municipal buildings in Delhi. This initiative is aimed at enhancing renewable energy deployment in the national capital and supporting India’s broader goals of sustainable development and decarbonisation.

Project Scope and Implementation

Under the MoU, SECI will facilitate the design, installation, and operation of rooftop and ground-mounted solar power systems on NDMC-owned buildings. These systems will generate clean, reliable electricity, reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, and contribute to lowering carbon emissions. The initiative is expected to result in significant energy savings for municipal facilities while promoting the adoption of green energy technologies at the government level.

Officials from SECI highlighted that the project will include technical assessment, grid integration, and maintenance support to ensure optimal performance and long-term sustainability. NDMC representatives emphasized that this collaboration aligns with the council’s commitment to energy efficiency, environmental responsibility, and providing citizens with sustainable public infrastructure.

Strategic Significance for Delhi

This partnership marks a significant step in Delhi’s transition toward a low-carbon, energy-efficient urban environment. By solarising a large number of municipal buildings, the project will not only reduce the city’s electricity costs but also demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of integrating renewable energy into urban infrastructure. It also serves as a model for other state and municipal bodies to adopt similar clean energy initiatives.

The SECI-NDMC MoU represents a collaborative approach between central and municipal authorities to accelerate India’s renewable energy mission. Once implemented, the 244 solarised buildings are expected to generate substantial clean energy, contribute to environmental sustainability, and support India’s net-zero emission targets.

This initiative further reinforces SECI’s role as a key facilitator of India’s renewable energy expansion, promoting the deployment of solar technologies at scale, and strengthening public-private partnerships to advance sustainable development. The project is set to serve as a benchmark for urban renewable energy initiatives, showcasing how government-led solarisation programs can create measurable environmental and economic benefits for cities.
