SMT Energy Powers Up Dallas’ First Standalone Battery Storage Project

As the first BESS project to be brought online in the City of Dallas, SMT Energy has powered SMT Dallas, a 10 MW/15 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS). The project is situated within the jurisdiction of Oncor Electric Delivery Company and represents a noteworthy turning point in the expansion of urban energy storage infrastructure within ERCOT.

“This project reflects our commitment to developing fast, flexible storage assets that are purposely built to support ERCOT’s growing demand needs,” stated Miguel Garcia, of SMT Energy. “Strategically located in one of ERCOT’s largest demand centers, the asset will begin operations in July as a fully merchant project. We’re excited and confident in our ability to optimize, dispatch, and deliver grid reliability to the City of Dallas.”

Constructed by Irby Construction under a full-wrap EPC contract and supported by FlexGen’s integrated solutions and energy management system, SMT Dallas demonstrates the power of deep coordination between partners. “SMT has shown they are eager to enhance the electrical grid at a fast pace with long-term goals—and that’s exactly how we like to work,” stated a representative from Irby Construction. “Our crews delivered this milestone with quality, safety, and efficiency, setting a new standard for how quickly a first-of-its-kind asset can come to life inside a major metropolitan area.”

SMT selected FlexGen to provide the full equipment and controls package, including battery enclosures, power conversion systems, and their HybridOS energy management software to maximize performance and operations. “ERCOT’s significant energy demand growth from data centers, electrification, and growing industrial loads requires storage solutions that can move fast and perform reliably from day one,” said Jason Abiecunas, EVP of Business Development at FlexGen. “We’re proud to support SMT Dallas with our integrated suite of solutions—from hardware procurement and battery commissioning to HybridOS energy management software. This project reflects FlexGen’s deep ERCOT experience and partnership with SMT Energy across a fleet of over 500 MWh of assets in the ERCOT market.”

By successfully energizing the project, SMT expands its merchant storage portfolio and demonstrates its dedication to merchant market performance, lean partnerships, and quick deployment.
