NTPC Limited has elevated Sujay Karmakar to the position of Executive Director, NETRA, recognising his more than three decades of contribution towards clean energy innovation, research and development, and advanced energy technology solutions. The elevation highlights NTPC’s continued focus on strengthening its capabilities in emerging technologies that support India’s transition towards a sustainable and low-carbon energy future.

In his new role, Sujay Karmakar will continue leading key R&D initiatives at NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA), focusing on areas such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), green hydrogen, long-duration energy storage, coal gasification, and other advanced energy solutions. These technologies are expected to play a significant role in supporting India’s net-zero objectives while ensuring long-term energy security.

Karmakar has been associated with NTPC Limited for over 30 years and has held several important leadership positions during his career. Prior to becoming Executive Director, NETRA, he served as Chief General Manager – NETRA & Green Chemicals, General Manager – Green Chemicals, and Additional General Manager at NETRA.

During his tenure, he has contributed to several innovative projects aimed at accelerating the adoption of cleaner technologies within the energy sector. His experience includes leading initiatives related to CCUS, green hydrogen production, methanol synthesis, biomass co-firing, waste-to-energy solutions, and energy storage systems.

His leadership has supported NTPC’s efforts to expand beyond traditional power generation and develop solutions aligned with the evolving energy landscape. Through research, pilot projects, and technology development, Karmakar has helped strengthen NTPC’s focus on sustainable energy pathways and future-ready power solutions.

The appointment comes as the global energy sector undergoes significant transformation, with increasing emphasis on reducing carbon emissions and improving the integration of renewable energy sources. Technologies such as green hydrogen, carbon management, and energy storage are becoming critical components in building a cleaner and more resilient energy ecosystem.

As Executive Director, NETRA, Karmakar will be responsible for advancing NTPC’s technology roadmap and supporting innovation-driven projects that contribute to the company’s sustainability goals. His expertise in energy research and clean technology development is expected to further strengthen NTPC’s initiatives in the renewable and emerging energy sectors.

NTPC has been expanding its focus on renewable energy green fuels, and decarbonisation technologies as part of its broader strategy to support India’s energy transition. The strengthening of leadership at NETRA reflects the company’s commitment to developing indigenous solutions for future energy challenges.

Sujay Karmakar’s elevation marks another step in NTPC’s journey towards becoming a more diversified and technology-driven energy organisation, with a stronger focus on clean energy innovation and sustainable growth.
