The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has announced Suryam International, a group company of GroupSurya, as the winner of India’s first green hydrogen-based ammonia auction, marking a groundbreaking achievement in the nation’s renewable energy sector.
As part of this milestone, Suryam International will supply 4,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually to Madras Fertilizers Limited (MFL) in Chennai for the next ten years. The supply contract is priced at ₹50 per kilogram ($0.57/kg), equivalent to $567 per tonne of ammonia.
This historic auction, held under the SIGHT Scheme (Mode-2A-Tranche-I), is a decisive step toward decarbonizing India’s fertilizer industry and scaling up adoption of green hydrogen and green ammonia. Madras Fertilizers Limited—59.5% owned by the Government of India—will be among the first fertilizer units in the country to integrate green ammonia into its operations.
“We are deeply committed to advancing the green fuels sector, which we believe will play a crucial role in shaping India’s sustainable future,” said Babita Singh, Director, Suryam International.
This achievement cements India’s position as a global frontrunner in renewable energy and establishes a benchmark for sustainable fertilizer production worldwide.
