Tata Power signed an agreement with Suzlon Energy to develop, construct and supply 700 megawatt (MW) wind turbine in Andhra Pradesh.
Officials said the 6,000-crore (US$740 million) venture is among a 7 gigawatt (GW) mega plan unveiled by Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL) and the state government in March 2025.
Notably, this happens to be the inaugural wind energy output in Andhra Pradesh since 2019.
The 7 GW of renewable energy comprising of solar, wind projects with/without storage options will experience investments amounting to 49,000 crore becoming one of the major renewable energy investments in the state.
“Turbines will be S144 Suzlon wind turbine generators and will be compliant with the government’s newly enhanced Revised List of Models and Manufacturers (RLMM) guidelines on domestic content. Turbines will be made in Andhra Pradesh in Suzlon’s factory there, which has now been revamped and has re-commenced production since 2024,” the source said.
It has also recently changed its RLMM guidelines where the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) has required local sourcing of critical components of wind turbines such as blade, gearbox, generator and tower.
“The project will be developed in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh and will be connected to the central grid and will generate 1,840 million units per year,” the source said.
The capacities will be established under the Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy established in Andhra Pradesh, the first of its kind clean energy policy in India that targets to build more than 160 GW of renewable energy in the state with a potential investment of over 10 trillion INR.
Part of the agreements signed in March with the state would see TPREL carry out preliminary screenings, feasibility studies and developments to identify the viability of these projects.
New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) will be offering requisite support in the form of facilitation, site identification, and support in evacuation infrastructure. Such a move is likely to contribute to the large-scale increase in Andhra Pradesh’s renewable energy capacity, not to mention the strengthening of TPREL as a contributor to the clean energy cause in India.
Stoked by a sexy Integrated Clean Energy Policy unveiled by the Nara Chandrababu Naidu administration in October 2024 that accelerated approvals and came up with fresh subsidies in a row, the state has also picked up a sizeable portion of the renewable energy investments in the nation over the previous year.
Other considerable committed investments besides Tata Power in renewables include several projects by NTPC Green ( 2.08 trillion), Serentica, by Vedanta ( 50,000 crore) as well as SAEL Industries ( 6,000 crore) and Brookfield ( 50,000 crore), etc.
