TERI Revives Biomass Gasifier Technology to Offer Affordable LPG Alternative

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has revived its biomass gasifier technology to provide a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for large-scale cooking applications. The initiative comes at a time when rising LPG prices and supply disruptions are creating challenges for commercial kitchens and institutional cooking setups.

TERI’s renewed focus aims to support sectors such as community kitchens, hostels, and food processing units by offering a cleaner and more reliable fuel option derived from biomass.

Technology Designed for Large-Scale Cooking Needs

The biomass gasifier technology turns leftover crops and other biomass into gas that can be burnt for cooking. This method not only cuts down on the need for fossil fuels, but it also uses resources that are available in the area, making it cost-effective for big users.

According to TERI, the technology has been successfully developed and refined over the years for thermal applications, providing an efficient alternative to conventional fuels. It is capable of delivering consistent heat output required for bulk cooking while significantly lowering operational costs.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

The revived gasifier systems should help the environment by lowering carbon emissions and encouraging the use of cleaner energy. Biomass is a renewable and carbon-neutral fuel that can be used in commercial kitchens to cook food in a way that is good for the environment.

In addition to environmental benefits, the technology also helps in reducing fuel expenses for institutions that rely heavily on LPG. By replacing expensive fossil fuels with biomass, users can achieve long-term cost savings while contributing to waste-to-energy solutions.

Supporting India’s Clean Energy Transition

TERI’s initiative aligns with India’s broader push toward renewable energy and energy security. By promoting decentralized energy solutions, the organization aims to reduce dependence on imported fuels and strengthen local energy ecosystems.

The return of biomass gasifier technology shows how important alternative energy sources are becoming for solving problems with the economy and the environment. As the need for cheap and long-lasting cooking fuels grows, these kinds of new ideas are likely to be very important in changing the way people use energy on a large scale all over the country.
