THDC India Ltd. signed an MoU and PPA with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited to supply 184.08 MW of clean power.

In February this year, THDC India Limited (THDCIL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) to supply 184.08 MW of clean power from India’s first Variable Speed Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP), located in Uttarakhand.

The contract is targeted at backing the peak hour power requirement in Gujarat as well as the ability to integrate renewable energy (RE) into the grid on a large scale. Shri Kanubhai Desai, Hon’ble Minister of Finance, Energy and Petrochemicals, Government of Gujarat; Shri S. J. Haider, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat; Shri Anupam Anand, MD, GUVNL; Ms. Bhakti Shamal, Joint Secretary, Government of Gujarat; Shri R. K. Vishnoi, CMD, THDCIL; and Shri A. K. Vijay Kumar, Special Officer, THDC India Ltd (Former Special Commissioner, Investment Promotion)

“This agreement reinforces THDCIL’s commitment to driving the energy transition through innovative hydropower technologies. With India’s first variable-speed pumped storage plant, we are offering Gujarat a reliable and green energy solution to meet its dynamic peak-hour requirements. The Tehri PSP stands as a testament to THDCIL’s engineering excellence and vision for a sustainable energy future. THDCIL is steadily advancing sustainable energy solutions through innovative and state-of-the-art technologies in power generation. The focus remains on reliability, flexibility and supporting India’s clean energy transition.”

    – Sh. R. K. Vishnoi, CMD, THDCIL.

“This marks a strategic step in THDCIL’s journey toward delivering innovative and commercially viable clean energy solutions. The organization remains committed to driving sustainable growth through such forward-looking initiatives.”

    – Sh. Sipan Kumar Garg, Director (Finance), THDCIL.

MoU and PPA are also very friendly to the vision of the Government of India that pumped storage is a sustainable solution to flexible generation and green balancing, especially with increasing renewable penetration and the variable demand profile.

Sh. Sourav Nandy, GM (Finance), GUVNL; Sh. R. K. Verma, AGM, THDCIL; Sh. The other officers to be present during the occasion were Ajay Vaish, DGM, THDCIL and other officers of the Government of Gujarat and GUVNL.

THDC India Limited (THDCIL) is a premier power sector Public Sector Enterprise (PSE) and a consistently profit-making company. In July 1988, the government incorporated it as a public limited company under the Companies Act, 1956, with the primary mandate to develop, operate, and maintain the 2400 MW Tehri Hydro Power Complex. Recognizing its operational excellence and strategic importance, the Government of India conferred “Mini Ratna – Category I” status on THDCIL in October 2009, followed by an upgrade to a Schedule ‘A’ PSU in July 2010.
