the Ministry of Power has announced the second tranche of its Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme aimed at catalyzing the development of 30 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across India

The combination of wind and solar power has been essential as the global energy system is revolutionized in the direction of renewable resources. For that, efficient, reliable energy storage of power is necessary because these energy sources are intermittent. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says batteries will make up 90% of the sixfold increase in global energy storage capacity through 2030, while 1,500GW is estimated to be available by the end of the decade.

This growth is led by falling costs, innovations in technology, and favorable policies to mitigate the emissions of greenhouse gases. In 2024, energy storage capacity alone in the United States exceeded 11 GW, marking a cumulative 49 GW of clean energy installations. In the growing world of energy storage, there are some companies whose individual stars have risen to the top; some of them have found creative and scalable storage systems to work in conjunction with solar and wind.

The top 10 companies driving cutting-edge storage tech and supporting the push toward a safe and decentralized carbon-free future are highlighted in this article.

1. Tesla Energy (USA)

Tesla Energy, a part of Tesla Inc., with its Powerwall and Megapack products, has revolutionized the market. Tesla shipped 31.4 GWh of battery storage products in 2024, an increase of 113% over the year before. The Megapack is designed for utility-scale installations and offers a scalable way to integrate renewable energy sources and stabilize the grid.

2. BYD (China)

The Energy Storage System (ESS) division of BYD provides lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery solutions for a variety of applications, such as grid support and frequency regulation. More than 30 countries have implemented Fluence’s technology, which supports a range of uses from renewable integration to frequency regulation.

4. CATL (China)

CATL is a leader in the development and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, with businesses covering R&D, manufacturing, and sales in battery systems for new energy vehicles and storage system. CATL’s utility-scale energy storage systems play a role in a number of international projects, improving load balancing, peak shaving, and grid stabilization for solar and wind installations. The company is also making investments in next-generation technologies, including sodium-ion batteries and solid-state systems, with the goal of achieving higher energy density and safety with lower costs. CATL’s extensive R&D capabilities and robust supply chain make it a pivotal player in the global transition to renewable energy.

5. Enphase Energy (USA)

Enphase Energy household battery choices are simple to install to solar PV. Their battery storage solutions and microinverter technology provide homeowners with grid resiliency and independence from the grid. Today, Enphase can be found all across North America, with a growing international presence.

6. South Korea’s LG Energy Solution

LG Energy Solution, spun off from LG Chem, provides state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries for various applications such as storage systems. Homeowners looking for dependable backup power and energy optimization are drawn to their RESU series.

7. NextEra Energy (USA)

NextEra Energy is one of the largest renewable energy companies in the United States, with significant investments in wind, solar, and energy storage projects. The company runs a number of battery storage facilities that improve grid reliability and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources through its subsidiary, NextEra Energy Resources.

8. France’s Neoen

The Hornsdale Power Reserve and the Victorian Big Battery are two of the largest battery storage projects in the world and were built by the French company Neoen, an independent renewable energy producer. Such projects demonstrate the promise of grid services offered by large storage solutions such as energy arbitrage and frequency control.

9. UK-based Highview Power

Highview Power, which is focused on long duration storage is developing its Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) technology. In 2024 the company secured £300 million of funding to build a 300 MWh LAES plant in Manchester, UK to preserve over 700 jobs, and increase grid flexibility.

10. China’s Sungrow Power Supply Co. Ltd.

Sungrow is a top supplier of energy storage systems and inverter solutions. Sungrow’s significant contribution in promoting a sustainable future has been recognized by BloombergNEF, which ranks the company among the top five global integrators of battery energy storage systems in 2024.

The successful integration of energy storage technologies with renewable energy sources is essential to the shift to a sustainable energy future. With their cutting-edge technologies that tackle the issues of intermittency and grid stability, the businesses mentioned in this article are leading this transition. Storage technologies will become more and more important in reaching global climate goals and guaranteeing a robust, dependable, and sustainable energy system as they develop and grow.
