The UAE is raising its clean energy ambitions by targeting 35% clean power generation by 2030-2031. Energy and Infrastructure Minister Suhail Mohammed Al Mazrouei said the country plans to achieve the higher target by encouraging greater private-sector participation and competition in electricity generation.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the minister highlighted the growing economic competitiveness of solar power. Advances in technology, larger project sizes, and lower equipment costs have made renewable energy increasingly affordable. At the same time, rapid developments in battery energy storage are improving the reliability of solar power.
According to the minister, modern storage systems can now store electricity for up to 24 hours at competitive costs, compared with only two to three hours previously. This development could allow solar power to provide electricity around the clock, making it a reliable alternative to conventional sources such as natural gas and nuclear power, while producing no carbon emissions during generation.
The UAE is also continuing to strengthen its electricity infrastructure to ensure a secure and reliable power supply. Investments in modern grids, efficient power plants, and reserve capacity are expected to reduce transmission losses, improve system performance, and support lower electricity costs for consumers.
The minister also pointed to the UAE’s experience with privatization in the power sector. Greater private investment helped reduce generation costs, improve management standards, and increase competition. UAE-based energy companies have since expanded their presence internationally and compete successfully for projects in global markets.
Looking ahead, the UAE will prioritize three key areas: accelerating clean energy deployment, expanding electricity interconnections with neighboring countries, and improving transmission efficiency. These efforts are expected to advance the country’s clean energy transition while ensuring a reliable and affordable electricity supply.
