Upper Sileru Pumped Storage Project to Power Andhra Pradesh’s Energy Future by 2029

The Upper Sileru Pumped Storage Project in Andhra Pradesh is set to play a crucial role in strengthening the state’s energy security, with completion targeted by 2029. The project, located in the Alluri Sitharama Raju district, is being developed to support the growing demand for reliable and sustainable power, especially as renewable energy capacity expands across the state.

With an installed capacity of 1,350 MW, the project will consist of nine units of 150 MW each, making it one of the significant pumped storage initiatives in the region. It is designed to store surplus electricity generated during off-peak hours and release it during periods of high demand, thereby ensuring grid stability.

Strategic Use of Existing Reservoirs

The project will utilize the existing Guntawada and Donkarayi reservoirs, minimizing the need for extensive new infrastructure while enhancing operational efficiency. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also accelerates the implementation timeline.

Officials highlighted that the integration of pumped storage systems is essential for balancing intermittent renewable sources such as solar and wind. By storing excess power and redistributing it when needed, the project will act as a backbone for Andhra Pradesh’s clean energy transition.

Supporting Andhra Pradesh’s Clean Energy Goals

The Upper Sileru project aligns with the state’s broader vision to increase renewable energy adoption and reduce dependence on conventional power sources. It is expected to significantly improve grid reliability and support round-the-clock power supply for industries and households.

Authorities emphasized that the project will strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s position as a leading state in renewable energy development. The initiative is also expected to contribute to economic growth by attracting investments and creating employment opportunities in the region.

Long-Term Impact on Power Sector

Once operational, the project will serve as a key asset in managing peak power demand and ensuring efficient energy utilization. By leveraging advanced storage technology, Andhra Pradesh aims to build a resilient and future-ready power infrastructure.

The Upper Sileru Pumped Storage Project thus represents a major step toward achieving sustainable energy goals while ensuring reliable electricity supply across the state.
