Vanda RE Pte Ltd, a joint venture company co-owned by Gurīn Energy Pte Ltd and Gentari through Gentari International Renewables Pte Ltd, today announced the signing of a major framework supply agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a leading supplier of battery technology and battery management systems.
The agreement will see Vanda RE procure up to 2.2 gigawatt hours (GWh) of CATL’s EnerX battery energy storage system (BESS) for the Vanda Solar & Battery Project, a utility-scale solar-plus-storage development to be located in the Riau Islands, Indonesia.
CATL’s BESS will enable the project—underpinned by 2 gigawatt peak (GWp) of installed solar PV capacity and 4.4 GWh of battery storage—to meet Indonesia’s local content requirement (TKDN). The batteries will be manufactured in CATL’s factory in the Karawang regency in Indonesia’s West Java province. The factory, which broke ground at the end of June, has a total battery capacity of 15 GW.
The project is part of broader efforts by Singapore and Indonesia to develop a green economic corridor between the two neighboring countries, starting with cooperation on green energy development. Projects like Vanda RE’s will incentivize top-tier clean tech companies like CATL to invest in setting up local manufacturing facilities, boosting the development of Indonesia’s clean technology supply chains and industries. This generates a positive knock-on effect for the Indonesian economy by lowering the cost of domestic renewable energy development and boosting the attractiveness of Indonesia as a destination for sectors dependent on green energy.
“Today’s announcement is another critical milestone in the development of the landmark Vanda Solar & Battery Project. Vanda RE is committed to developing the project to the highest technical and operating standards, which is why we are delighted to have secured CATL’s best-in-class batteries.”
– Enda Ginting, Country Manager, Indonesia, of Gurīn Energy.
Today’s announcement is another demonstration of the steady progress being made in the project’s development. Earlier this year, Vanda RE signed a 1 GW framework supply agreement for solar panels and selected the Owner’s Engineer for the project.
“Our progress reflects the strong confidence that partners and stakeholders have in the project as well as the vision of a green economic corridor between Indonesia and Singapore. The Vanda project is a stepping stone to bringing that vision to life, and we are happy to do our part.”
