Waaree to Build India’s Largest Battery Gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh

Waaree Energies, one of India’s biggest companies that makes renewable energy, has said it will build India’s biggest lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh. The project will make advanced battery cells and help the country meet its growing energy storage needs.

Gigafactory Details and Investment

The facility will be developed by Waaree Energies’ battery arm with an investment of ₹8,175 crore (around USD 1 billion). Once completed, the gigafactory will have a manufacturing capacity of 30 GWh (gigawatt hours), making it the biggest of its kind in India. It will produce lithium-ion battery cells, modules, and packs, primarily for the electric vehicle (EV) sector and stationary energy storage systems.

The investment aligns with India’s drive to strengthen energy storage infrastructure, reduce dependence on imports, and support domestic electric mobility and renewable integration.

Government Support and Strategic Focus

The project has received backing under the PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme for advanced chemistry cell (ACC) battery manufacturing. This support is part of the government’s efforts to build a strong local supply chain for battery technology and make India a competitive global player.

Officials involved in the announcement highlighted that the Andhra Pradesh government will provide support in terms of land allocation and clearances to ensure timely execution.

Boosting EV and Storage Ecosystem

Once it is up and running, the gigafactory is expected to make India’s electric vehicle ecosystem much better by making high-quality battery cells in India. India currently gets most of its battery cells from other countries, but making them in India will help lower costs and make supply chains stronger for EV makers and energy storage solutions.

Industry analysts say that improved domestic battery capacity will reduce reliance on foreign imports, create jobs, and support India’s larger goals of energy transition and net-zero by 2070.

Waaree’s Renewable Energy Expansion

Waaree Energies is already a well-known maker of solar panels and provider of energy solutions. The company wants to get into the energy storage and electric mobility markets with this new gigafactory project, which will help India’s clean energy future.

The company hopes that the factory will be up and running in the next few years. This would be a big step forward for India’s renewable energy and battery manufacturing industries.
