Adani Power has commenced development of its ₹48,000 crore, 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project at Chapar in Assam’s Dhubri district. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for the project on September 20, 2026.
The Chapar project will comprise four units of 800 MW each and will use ultra-supercritical technology. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in phases starting from December 2030.
According to Adani Power, the project is expected to generate up to 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 5,000 jobs once operational. The company said the development will also create opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, transport operators and service providers.
The Chapar plant forms part of Adani Group’s broader ₹63,000 crore power investment planned for Assam. This includes approximately ₹15,000 crore for two pumped storage projects with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW through Adani Green Energy, in addition to the ₹48,000 crore thermal power project.
Adani Power had earlier emerged as the successful bidder in October 2025 to establish the 3,200 MW project and subsequently received the Letter of Award from Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) in November 2025.
The company said the Chapar plant will use high-efficiency systems and modern environmental safeguards. Once commissioned, it is expected to supply power for household, commercial and industrial requirements in Assam.
The project is expected to become one of the largest power-generation assets in Northeast India upon completion, while adding significant generation capacity to Assam’s power infrastructure.
