AFRY appointed as Owner’s Engineer for 36 MWp Solar PV + BESS Project in Sepang, Malaysia

AFRY has been selected by Cenergi Aeropolis Renewable Energy Sdn Bhd (CARE) to provide Owner’s Engineer (OE) services for a 36 MWp (30 MWac) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with a 10 MW / 40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Sepang, Selangor, Malaysia. The project represents an important step forward for Malaysia’s clean energy transition and the growing adoption of utility‑scale solar‑plus‑storage solutions.

Powering KLIA with Reliable, Low‑Carbon Solar Energy

The facility, which is in the KLIA Aeropolis zone, is part of the Solar for Self-Consumption (SELCO) program and is meant to provide clean, renewable electricity directly to operations at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The project owners say that the system will produce about 46 GWh of clean energy each year and cut down on CO₂ emissions by about 35,000 tonnes each year. This is the same as taking 8,000 cars off the road or powering over 13,000 homes.

This project is one of Malaysia’s first large-scale self-consumption solar plants with energy storage, thanks to the addition of a utility-scale BESS. This greatly improves the plant’s ability to keep running and its energy reliability.

Petteri Härkki, SVP and Head of Segme  nt Renewables & Energy Storage at AFRY.

“This project reflects AFRY’s strength in guiding complex solar‑plus‑storage developments from concept to commissioning. With our global references and multidisciplinary engineering expertise, we are proud to help accelerate Malaysia’s transition toward a more sustainable and reliable energy system.”

AFRY’s scope of work

As Owner’s Engineer, AFRY will deliver comprehensive support throughout the project lifecycle, including:

  • Tender Support Services
  • Engineering design review
  • Project management and supervision
  • Construction site supervision
  • BESS Commissioning and Testing

This OE appointment reinforces AFRY’s long‑standing expertise in renewable energy and battery energy storage systems across Asia and globally.

AFRY’s Global Leadership in Solar and BESS Expertise

AFRY is a trusted partner in the global clean‑energy transition, bringing more than 30 years of solar experience, covering over 90,000 MW of capacity across all stages from design to commissioning, and 500+ delivered projects in 50+ countries.
