AmpereHour Energy, a comprehensive energy storage solutions provider, in collaboration with Indigrid, has commissioned a 20 MW/40 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) for BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) at the Kilokari Substation in Delhi. This is the first utility-scale standalone BESS in India to receive regulatory permission under Section 63 of the Electricity Act, 2003, marking a significant national milestone. The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) is providing a concessional loan to support the effort.
“The 20 MW/40 MWh BESS was delivered on a turnkey basis under a long-term battery energy storage capacity agreement (BESPA) with BRPL. Installed and commissioned in just 11 months, ahead of schedule, the system became operational in April 2025. The project primarily benefits 100,000 residents of South Delhi, including high-demand areas such as Defence Colony and Lajpat Nagar,” stated AmpereHour Energy.
The BESS helps replace fossil fuel-based power generation during peak hours with renewable energy from solar or wind by providing four hours of continuous backup power every day, two of which are during afternoon peaks and two of which are at night. Additionally, the system improves electricity availability for vital facilities, such as hospitals in Moolchand and Safdarjung and important educational institutions, and lessens dependency on diesel gensets.
Through its 80 MWh of daily discharge, the project has the ability to offset roughly 65 tons of CO2 per day and will be crucial in peak load shaving, capital expenditure deferral, energy arbitrage savings, and ancillary services provision. It will also lower power purchase costs and improve grid resilience.
The system is powered by AmpereHour’s proprietary ELINA Energy Management Software, which enables real-time, AI-driven battery optimization. ELINA manages India-specific grid challenges such as voltage dips and peak spikes, while allowing for intelligent energy shifting based on real-time demand and supply signals.
“Energy storage is now a cornerstone of modern power systems,” said Ayush Misra, co-founder and CEO of AmpereHour Energy. “We’re proud to partner with Indigrid and BRPL on this landmark project, demonstrating the scalability and reliability of our technology in urban utility networks. As India accelerates its transition to clean energy, solutions like these are essential in ensuring a resilient, flexible, and future-ready grid.”
“This project marks a decisive step toward grid modernization and higher levels of renewable integration in the energy mix,” said Umang Maheshwari, Managing Director BESS, GEAPP. “We anticipate improved voltage quality, enhanced grid security and enabling us to lower our power purchase cost. I would like to applaud the AmpereHour Energy team for completing the project within the stipulated time at such a demographically challenging site with utmost levels of safety.”
AmpereHour Energy, founded in 2017 by IIT Bombay alumni and power sector veterans Ayush Misra, Rahul Shelke, Harshal Thakur, and Neehar Jathar, delivers modular, scalable, and software-led BESS solutions. The company’s projects span over 50 sites globally, with 100 MWh commissioned to date and nearly 1000 MWh under execution across India, Middle East, Africa and Europe, including large-scale deployments of 180 MW/360 MWh and 250 MWh/ 500 MWh in India.
