BC Jindal's JIRE Secures 300 MW Solar-BESS Project from SJVN

As India fast-tracks its transition to clean energy and battery storage dominance, BC Jindal Group’s renewable energy arm, Jindal India Renewable Energy (JIRE), has achieved a major milestone by securing a 300 MW solar-plus-battery energy storage system (BESS) project from state-run SJVN Ltd. This win marks a significant leap in India’s journey towards integrating large-scale renewable energy with grid stability solutions.

The project is part of SJVN’s 1200 MW inter-state transmission system (ISTS)-connected solar power tender, which includes 600 MW of battery storage systems. JIRE won the bid for 300 MW at a competitive tariff of ₹3.32/kWh. It will be developed on a build-own-operate basis and must be completed within 24 months from the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

As per the agreement, SJVN will enter into a 25-year PPA with JIRE to procure clean solar power and supply it to various state utilities and buyers. In line with the technical requirements, JIRE will also deploy an energy storage system with a minimum capacity of 0.5 MW/2MWh per 1 MW of contracted solar capacity—a move that aligns with India’s vision for firm and dispatchable renewable energy.

This is not the first win for JIRE in the storage-integrated renewables space. The company recently received a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for a similar 300 MW solar-plus-storage project from NHPC, further establishing its position as a key player in India’s green energy transition.

As part of its broader growth roadmap, JIRE plans to invest $2.5 billion over the next five years in India’s renewable energy sector. These investments are aimed at strengthening the national grid and enhancing energy storage capacity. Among its major initiatives is a 2 GW per year solar cell and module manufacturing facility under construction in Maharashtra, expected to be operational by September 2026.

In a statement, a JIRE spokesperson said,
“Winning this project reaffirms JIRE’s ability to deliver scalable and clean energy solutions. It strengthens the growing trust in our capabilities and reinforces our commitment to delivering firm, clean power that supports India’s energy transition. We remain focused on expanding our capacity to 5 GW in the coming years across solar, wind, hybrid, RTC, and FDRE platforms.”

JIRE’s rapid progress comes at a time when battery storage is becoming a cornerstone of India’s energy infrastructure. The BESS market in India is projected to grow at a CAGR of 11.41% until 2032, driven by the critical need for grid reliability, renewable integration, and flexible power delivery.

Founded in 1952, BC Jindal Group has evolved from a steel pipe manufacturer into a diversified industrial conglomerate. With its growing footprint in clean energy through JIRE, the group is now positioned at the forefront of India’s renewable energy revolution.
