BYD Unveils World’s Largest 14.5 MWh Energy Storage System

BYD launched its new DC energy storage system, Haohan, on September 18 at the International Digital Energy Expo at Shenzhen. The company asserts that Haohan has the largest unit capacity of 14.5 MWh, which is a production that significantly improves the utility-scale energy storage technology.

The minimum single-unit capacity of 14.5 MWh of Haohan as determined by BYD is more than twice what the industry provides at the moment (6 to 7 MWh). It allows 10 MWh of storage when fitted in a conventional 20-foot container. The system delivers a volumetric energy content of 233 kWh per cubic meter, according to BYD a 51 percent higher than the industry average.

The company highlighted that Haohan was efficient in large-scale deployments. The system used would save more than 50 units, decrease the land footprint by a third and decrease the total battery cell count by 76 in a 1 Gwh storage project.

According to BYD, such enhancements will be a source of increased project viability and efficiency.

Haohan will serve the changing needs of the power operators and any renewable energy projects where large-scale storage is needed to provide the stability and flexibility in the grid. BYD, which is a company that supports the energy transition, claimed that the system helps in the transition, as it provides a high-capacity, space-efficient, and affordable storage solution.

“The launch of Haohan sets a new benchmark in storage capacity and efficiency. Its launch represents an important milestone for the industry,” said the company.

This is a manifestation of the rising pace of technological advancement in the energy storage industry. As renewable energy production becomes a global activity, the capacity to store energy in large amounts becomes more and more important in balancing supply and demand, and in combining intermittent resources such as wind and sun with other energy production methods to provide greater energy security.

The entry of BYD in this area together with Haohan is an indication that the company is serious about promoting clean energy technology. The industry analysts anticipate that the high single-unit capacity of Haohan will add to the competition in the global market as the utilities, developers and governments are in need of scalable and dependable storage methods.

The Haohan debut at the Shenzhen show was highly noticed by the industry professionals, which further established BYD as a leader in the field of electric vehicles and energy storage. The company mentioned that Haohan is designed with good standards of safety, longevity and flexibility for different project scales.

BYD sees Haohan as a platform that will reduce the cost of projects and the area requirement, enhance the performance of the system, contribute to the further application of utility-scale energy storage and aid in the integration of renewable energy to develop a more stable and sustainable energy platform.
