In a significant stride towards sustainable urban transportation and clean energy adoption, Chandigarh has officially inaugurated four solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs across the city. This initiative integrates renewable energy with EV infrastructure to offer fast, reliable, and eco-friendly charging solutions for EV users.
Strategic Locations to Enhance Accessibility
The newly established solar EV charging hubs are located at key points throughout the city to maximize accessibility and convenience for electric vehicle owners:
- IT Park – The flagship site featuring a 500 kWp rooftop solar installation
- New Lake Parking (Sector 42)
- Botanical Garden Parking
- New Grain Market (Sector 39)
At the IT Park hub, 230 kWp of solar capacity has been specifically allocated to power EV charging and battery swapping stations, while the remainder supports other infrastructure needs. To ensure uninterrupted services during cloudy days or at night, each hub includes integrated battery storage systems.
OPEX Model Encourages Private Participation
The project has been developed under an Operational Expenditure (OPEX) model, which encourages private sector involvement without the need for upfront government subsidies. This innovative financial structure ensures the economic sustainability of the project and provides a framework for scalable growth of the solar EV charging network.
Driving Environmental and Urban Transformation
By leveraging solar power for EV charging, Chandigarh aims to drastically reduce carbon emissions from the transportation sector. The initiative supports the city’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions and advancing sustainable urban development. It also stands as a replicable model for other Indian cities looking to integrate renewable energy with mobility infrastructure.
Path Forward: Scalable Expansion
The initial success of these four charging hubs will serve as a foundation for future expansion. The Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST) plans to broaden the EV charging network by incorporating lessons learned during the pilot phase. This will further enhance access for both private and commercial EV users across the city.
A Model for Sustainable Urban Mobility
Chandigarh’s launch of solar-powered EV charging hubs marks a landmark achievement in green transportation and clean energy integration. By building a smart, efficient, and renewable energy-driven charging ecosystem, the city is setting a national benchmark for eco-friendly urban mobility initiatives.
