The Climate Pledge, a joint venture between Amazon and Global Optimism, has revealed Joint Operation Unifying Last-mile Electrification (JOULE), a new project. With the help of $2.65 million in funding, Bengaluru, the innovation hub of India, will soon have a network of shared EV charging stations that run solely on renewable energy. At Doddakallasandra, the first charging station is currently up and running.
By 2030, JOULE aims to support over 5,500 electric vehicles and eliminate the infrastructural gaps that have impeded the adoption of EVs by business fleets. Important industry players, such as Greenko, a generator of renewable energy, and Kazam, who will build the network of charging stations, will assist the project. The project is expected to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by an estimated 25,700 tons by 2030 and save approximately 11.2 million liters of fuel. Between 2024 and 2030, the project is anticipated to generate 185 full-time employment in Bengaluru.
Amazon, Mahindra Logistics, Uber, HCLTech, and Magenta Mobility are among the companies that have signed The Climate Pledge. They will make the most of these EV charging stations in order to maximize the utilization of infrastructure for their fleet operations.
Abhinav Singh, VP of Operations at Amazon India, commented, “JOULE advances our goal of deploying 10,000 EVs in India by 2025. We’re proud to be part of this initiative to expand charging infrastructure in Bengaluru.”
Building on Amazon’s continuous dedication to sustainability, the JOULE initiative aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement’s deadline.
