Group14 Technologies, the biggest producer of advanced silicon battery materials worldwide, today revealed a significant performance milestone: SCC55 is allowing silicon battery producers to reliably reach more than 1,500 charge cycles, and in certain situations, over 3,000, in a variety of applications. For silicon batteries as well as all other rechargeable batteries now on the market, this accomplishment establishes a new benchmark.
“The data is clear: silicon batteries have crossed a critical threshold, and 1,500 cycles is the new 1,000,” stated Rick Luebbe, CEO and Co-Founder of Group14 Technologies. “This performance benchmark for silicon batteries presents a new era of durability combined with higher energy density and faster charging for all types of rechargeable energy storage.”
The silicon battery industry has long aimed to achieve 1,000 charge cycles, which is the standard for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Recent data collected from over 20 Group14 clients utilizing SCC55 shows that it can withstand over 1,500 cycles in a variety of applications while retaining the major advantages of silicon batteries, which include faster charging and a better energy density. Silicon batteries are now the new benchmark for the best-performing rechargeable batteries, surpassing lower cycle life for the first time.
The total cost of ownership is significantly impacted by this degree of capabilities, especially in battery-dominant industries like energy storage systems (ESS) in AI data centers, electric vehicles (EVs), and electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOLs).
Group14’s silicon battery material is now powering millions of devices globally and is compatible with a variety of battery forms, including LFP, LMFP, and high-nickel chemistries. EVs, AI-enabled gadgets, eVTOLs, and grid applications are all benefiting from the revolutionary silicon battery performance that SCC55 is providing.
