Deepak Gupta, a seasoned energy sector professional, on Sunday officially assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India) Limited, India’s largest natural gas transmission and marketing company. He succeeds Sandeep Kumar Gupta, who retired on February 28, 2026, and will serve a tenure until February 28, 2029.
A mechanical engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, Gupta brings extensive experience in natural gas transmission, marketing, infrastructure development, and corporate management. According to a GAIL statement, “He brings a comprehensive blend of technical, strategic and board-level leadership. His expertise spans project and construction management, contracts and global procurement, technology selection, business development, operations and maintenance.”
Gupta joined GAIL in February 2022 as Director (Projects). Under his leadership, GAIL successfully completed the Dabhol breakwater project of Konkan LNG, a GAIL subsidiary, ensuring all-weather operations.
The company highlighted, “He has pioneered many digital transformation initiatives, enhancing operational agility and transparency in business areas.”
Before joining GAIL, Gupta had a distinguished 32-year career at Engineers India Limited, where he led large cross-functional teams on complex projects. His portfolio includes landmark initiatives such as the world’s largest single-train Dangote Refinery & Petrochemical Complex in Nigeria, the HMEL mega petrochemical complex at Bathinda, and GAIL’s petrochemical expansion at Pata. He also led India’s first greenfield refinery project in Mongolia, significantly contributing to the country’s global energy diplomacy.
The company also noted Gupta’s contributions as a thought leader. “A thought leader and prolific writer, Gupta has authored several technical papers and articles on critical packages and fast-tracking project execution. His ideas on project acceleration, digitisation and excellence have been institutionalised as best practices,” the statement added.
GAIL emphasizes that Gupta’s appointment is expected to strengthen operational efficiency, drive sustainable growth, and enhance the company’s global energy presence, leveraging his deep expertise in large-scale projects, digital initiatives, and strategic leadership.
Under his guidance, the company aims to continue its renewable and green energy initiatives, expand its infrastructure footprint, and ensure reliable gas supply and efficient energy solutions across India.
